  • What to feed and not feed the system with?

    Only Food system:

Kitchen Waste: The system can digest food leftovers such as rice, cheese, meat, cooking oil, vegetable peels, fruit and any other “wet” food waste. Avoid feeding it large quantities of citrus fruit peels because they contain anti-bacterial oil which may reduce the effectiveness of the digestion.

Animal Manure: Animal manure, free from stones, straw and dirt, well-mixed with an equal quantity of water to create a wet slurry. You may also add dog or cat waste (without the sand or litter). It is recommended to wet the animal manure thoroughly, creating slurry before feeding it into the system. Dry waste will float to the surface of the digester tank and will not be properly digested. The digestive process in the system is similar to the one in our stomach where diversity equals stability. With that being said, please pay attention also to what’s not to feed the system with.

Wood shavings, straw, earth, sand, tree branches, paper, metal, plastic, glass, grass, or any non-organic liquid. It is also best to limit certain organic materials such as citrus peels, large pits from fruits such as avocado, etc. Citrus peels change the pH level and pits are difficult to digest.

    Bio-Toilet system:

Human Waste: It is possible to add human waste directly to the biodigester. With our Bio-toilet addition, you can easily manage human waste in a hygienic and efficient way.  The human waste is transported directly into the digester through pipes and can be completely off-grid.

  • How should the effluent/Bio-fertilizer be treated?

The HomeBiogas digester only provides partial, primary wastewater treatment for the connected HomeBiogas toilet. Effluent from the system requires further treatment and should be managed according to local wastewater treatment regulations.

The effluent should be safely diverted directly to a treatment solution WITHOUT the potential for user contact. The effluent should NOT be irrigated directly to plants.

    Effluent management options:
Connect to an existing sewage line.
Connect to an existing septic tank.
    Construct a drain field/mulch basin.

Contact our support team – [email protected] to learn more about the best way to plan your system’s effluent management.

  • What's the difference between compost toilet and HomeBiogas Bio-toilet?

    Compost Toilet:
    Process:
Compost toilets use the natural decomposition of organic waste, including human waste, in the presence of oxygen (aerobic decomposition).
The waste is turned into compost over time.
End Product: The end product is compost, a nutrient-rich material that can be used as a soil amendment.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance involves managing the composting process, ensuring the correct balance of carbon and nitrogen, and periodically removing finished compost. Installation: Compost toilets can be self-contained or part of a larger composting system, requiring proper ventilation.

    HomeBiogas Bio-toilet:
Process: HomeBiogas Bio-toilets use anaerobic digestion to break down human waste and convert it into biogas and liquid effluent.
This process occurs in the absence of oxygen.
    End Products:
Biogas: A renewable energy source for cooking or heating.
Maintenance: Minimal maintenance is needed, with occasional checks and ensuring proper conditions for anaerobic digestion
Installation: Bio-toilets are a part of the HomeBiogas system, which includes a biodigester for waste treatment.

  • How much Bio-fertilizer Homebiogas produce?

Since your HomeBiogas system works as a close cycle- the amount of output produced by the system is depends on your input. For example – if you will add 4L of food waste + 4L of water into your HomeBiogas2 system, you can expect about 8L of Bio-fertilizer.

  • What makes Homebiogas Bio-fertilizer so unique?

Bio-fertilizer is a rich organic compound containing a variety of micro and macro-organisms, along with nutrients and dissolved organic matter. Unlike common fertilizers, ours is chemical-free, making it not only beneficial for your crops and garden but also for your soil. The best part? You get to create your own unique Bio-fertilizer based on the inputs you feed your system! Discover more about the benefits of Bio-fertilizer in our guide.

  • Does the Bio-fertilizer have expiry date?

Bio-fertilizer works best when it’s fresh, but you can store it for up to 6 months. Just find a shady spot and use a container with a breathing cap to let gases escape.
Check out this video for more tips on storing Bio-fertilizer.

  • What happens if HomeBiogas is fed with more than the maximum recommended amount?

We highly recommend that you don’t exceed the limit and use the Bio-Bin that comes with your HomeBiogas kit to make sure you stay within the input limits to ensure optimal performance. Overfeeding over a period of time can make the system too acidic, which is not good for the system’s bacteria health. But if you keep your system in top shape by using our Bio-Booster probiotics regularly, feeding more than the maximum occasionally shouldn’t have an impact.

  • What standards does HomeBiogas follow?

We have taken the following steps to validate the quality and the safety of our system:

    • The unit was audited for safety by a qualified safety engineer who is a biogas expert; this expert certified our system to be extremely safe. A full safety report is available upon request.
    • European CE certificate for safety.
    • HomeBiogas LTD is ISO 9001 (for quality) and 14001 (for environmental compliance) certified.
    • We provide international insurance coverage through product liability insurance that covers injuries or damages.
    • Our products were approved for installation and use by EU and Israeli governmental institutions that funded deployment projects in the Palestinian Authority and Israel.
    • Our products have been sold to thousands of users in over 106 countries.
In order to promote and advance standards for domestic biogas systems, we joined the International Standards Organization (ISO)TC255 Technical Consortium that is defining the standards for all types of biogas systems.

Currently, there is no international or national standard or regulation for domestic biogas systems. The reason is that this is a relatively new product and it takes time to write and certify standards.  As the standard-bearer for the new, evolving standards, even prior to their publication, we are designing our products to meet those standards once they are in place.

  • What safety measures does HomeBiogas take?

    A. Certificates

HomeBiogas was designed and tested by engineers with years of field experience in biogas behind them. It received the European Community CE stamp of approval for safety. The company received 2 ISO certifications. Lastly, HomeBiogas was also tested and approved for safety and health by the Israeli Ministry of Environmental Protection and Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.

    B. Design

Our safety engineers specifically created a soft case so that the Biogas would be stored at low pressure. This ensures that it will not explode. Adding to this, HomeBiogas stores a relatively small amount of biogas which is a minuscule amount compared to other gas connections.

    C. Science

The low Methane content in biogas means that it is flammable only at its ignition in the stove burner. Once it leaves the burner, it gets diffused into the air it loses its flammability.

  • Is cooking on biogas safe?

It most certainly is! In fact, the biogas produced in HomeBiogas is actually much safer than your current LPG (liquified petroleum gas) or propane gas tank for several reasons:

    • Unlike LPG cylinders or propane tanks, the biogas in the HomeBiogas system is not compressed. Our safety engineers intentionally created a soft case to hold the biogas so that it is stored at low pressure.
    • Since the gas is not compressed, the appliance stores a relatively small quantity compared to gas stored in cylinders. It is too little to pose a serious threat if ignited and is a minuscule amount compared to any other gas connection.
    • Methane, which makes up 60% of biogas, is lighter than air and will diffuse immediately into the atmosphere if released from the appliance for any reason. This occurs naturally in waste disposal facilities like landfills all the time. What is unique about HomeBiogas is that we are harnessing the energy potential of the potent greenhouse gas (methane) before it is released into the atmosphere.
    • Methane needs a concentration of 50% to be flammable. The moment it hits the air it becomes less concentrated, rendering it completely non-flammable.
  • Can my bag explode when it is full?

No. The system works by way of displacement. The outlet pushes out the bio-slurry, and the excess gas escapes through the pressure release mechanism near the outlet.

  • Does the system meet all global safety standards?

The system is safe, user friendly and meets both the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 23590 standard and CE mark for biogas systems.
